Deadline reported earlier this week that the second sequel to Meet the Parents was heading back into the studio in order to tweak the final edit; nothing unusual with a polish after screen testing. However, new reports from the New York Magazine's Vulture Blog state that Universal have scrambled into negotiations to persuade Dustin Hoffman to reprise his role from Meet the Fockers.
This is unusual, Little Focker's officially wrapped up proceedings awhile ago now, without Hoffman. His late addition of now suggests that post production has caused nervous twitches behind the scenes that the film is struggling to hit the mark and that Hoffman was needed to make it work.
Little Focker's appears to have had a troubled conception; at one point director Paul Wietz faced the axe, until that is Universal decided that it would be best to do a post production fix to the footage they had. Since it wrapped, Wietz, writer/producer John Hamburg, producer Jay Roach and Ben Stiller, are said to have tried to produce a 'post fix' but to no avail. So with that news we should not surprised at the rumours that these 'final tweaks' actually translate to a re-shoot involving all of the principal cast in September.
But will Hoffman return? It is said that he refused to take up the option originally due to the small scale role that was written in for him. Even if the heart was willing, Hoffman may not be available due to commitments to Michael Mann and David Milch's HBO drama Luck.
Let's hope that before its release that the current 'problems' are eradicated from the picture, with or without the introduction of Hoffman. In our books we would prefer to see the 'Little Focker' in as he has done nothing but add to quality to his late career collection of quirk support casting.
